Friendly Works was started in April 2020 by me, Matt Kump, as a home for all of my random creations. I'm based in beautiful, picturesque, jewel of the northwest: Vancouver, BC.
My background's in graphic, software, and product design, but I have a big love of sequential discovery puzzles. When I left my job at the start of 2020, I'd planned on taking a year to travel and shift careers into the world of hospitality, but the world had other plans. Instead, I was mostly stuck at home, and needed to explore more isolated hobbies. That's when I bought a laser cutter.
Since then, I've been creating all sorts of things, using primarily acrylic and wood, and most recently making more complex puzzles with the same tools and techniques.
My design philosophy is pretty simple (and young): clever over complicated. I want those who solve my puzzles to think 'of course!' instead of 'at last!', and my design approach reflects that. The works of the Karakuri Creation Group (and in particular Akio Kamei) heavily influence my approach... If you haven't seen their work, I highly recommend it:https://karakuri.gr.jp/en/
